NEW HAVEN — A Hamden man died of injuries sustained in a crash that damaged several vehicles on a residential street in the city on Tuesday morning, police say.
New Haven police were called to Nicoll Street in the East Rock neighborhood around 7:50 a.m. Tuesday.
Andreozzi was driving a Tesla at “high speed” and collided with nine vehicles on the street, seven of which were parked and two were “in motion” at the time of the accident, according to Captain Rose. Dell, police department media liaison and information officer.
Dell said Andreozzi was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital, where he died a short time later. Two other drivers were also taken to hospital with minor injuries.
Police recorded the route and are investigating the accident involving multiple vehicles. The department’s crash reconstruction team spoke with witnesses and obtained CCTV footage, Dell said.
“The investigation will take time and will include a mechanical inspection of the Tesla,” Dell noted.
Car parts, glass and debris could be seen strewn across the street on Tuesday morning.
A white Jeep was in the middle of the road, damaged in the front with its front bumper hanging off one side. A dark colored BMW was also on the road and appeared to have been hit on its front left side. At least two other vehicles on the side of the road had their rear windshields completely shattered.
Liam Beers, 27, from Nicoll Street, said he woke up to the sound of the crash outside his flat.
“I just lay there thinking, I hope that’s not my car,” Beers said. “Then I heard a car alarm go off, and I was like, this is definitely my car alarm.”
The rear of the de Beers Honda Civic had been shattered and both taillights had been shattered in the crash. The impact also shattered the car’s rear window.
Beers said he and his partner plan to move to Chicago on June 5, but the trip may have to be delayed due to damage.
A Yale-New Haven Hospital doctor who was in the area at the time of the crash said it sounded like an “explosion”.
The doctor, who asked not to be named, said she immediately offered medical assistance to those involved in the accident.
“There were a lot of people helping out,” she said. “The EMS arrived very quickly to assess the scene.”
