Rita Wilson has broken her silence on what really happened on the red carpet when her husband Tom Hanks was seen ‘scolding’ a man at Cannes Film Festival.
As the couple attended the premiere for his new film Asteroid City on Tuesday, the actor, 66, looked uncharacteristically frustrated as he jabbed a finger at PR manager Vincent Chapalain.
Actress and producer Rita, who also stars in the film, could be seen holding her hand up in front of her as she spoke to the unnamed man.
However Rita has now set the record straight on what really happened, taking to Instagram hours later to clear the air about the ‘altercation’.
Sharing a picture of the moment, Rita wrote: ‘This is called “I can’t hear you. People are screaming. What did you say? Where are we supposed to go?”‘
She then added: ‘We had a great time. Go see Asteroid City!’
Dressed in a tuxedo suit and wearing a bow tie, Tom could be seen speaking to the pair in what appeared to be an attempt to calm the situation.
However, Tom seemed to remain miffed as the trio spoke before heading down the red carpet to pose for pictures at the event.
Vincent also cleared up the moment on his own Twitter page, responding to someone who had asked what was going on.
The person had questioned: ‘Did Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson get confuse with security? An explanation?’
Vincent himself replied, writing: ‘They just asked me if they should go back to the start of the mat with the rest of the film crew (I’m not security) wink.’
The moment caused a stir online with many speculating about what had happened to cause the reaction from the ‘one of the nicest guys in Hollywood’.
However it appears that it was nothing more than a misunderstanding according to Rita’s account of the exchange.
The moment came up on Wednesday’s episode of Lorraine, as the host Lorraine Kelly asked her show business correspondent Tyler West his thoughts.
When asked if Tom was having a ‘rant’, Tyler said: ‘Did he though? Look at his smile. I don’t think so! He was walking the red carpet, and that picture there, he just needs a wee! He wants to know where the toilet is.
Lorraine said: ‘He’s just asking, what way do I go? He’s not shaking his fists.’
Tyler confirmed: ‘You can’t believe everything you see in these pictures.’
While Lorraine added: ‘Sometimes the camera does lie.’
During the evening, Tom wore a black tuxedo and matching bow tie which he paired with a smart white shirt for the premiere.
His partner Rita looked glamorous in a chic black dress with a long black cloak which trailed the ground behind her.
The garment was adorned with silver jewels which shimmered under the spotlights on the red carpet.
Both Tom and Rita appeared in good spirits as they posed for pictures before heading inside to watch the film.

Their car breaks down so they take it to Asteroid City to get repaired.
